Vale Of Glamorgan Hotel

Origins

The resort is owned by Leekes, the successful Welsh retail family, who also own the out of town department stores of the same name (although as a completely separate company). Gerald Leeke, the current chairman, purchased what was then a small nine hole golf course at Hensol in 1992 and soon begun on a rapid expansion programme. The eighteen hole Lake Course opened in 1994 followed by the opening of the health & racquets club in 1998, which currently boasts a 4800 strong membership. The hotel opened just in time for the 1999 Rugby World Cup and the award winning Wales National course was opened in June 2004 by Sir Steve Redgrave.

Success Factor

Success has been achieved as a result of working closely with partners such as the Wales Tourist Board to help establish Wales as a golf break destination, Cardiff Initiative for conferences and city breaks and the benefit of the Millennium stadium hosting FA soccer games – a team always stays at the hotel. The massive increase in leisure tourism business can also, in part, be credited to this. In addition, a strong business plan, focussing on marketing, sales and a high standard of customer service has resulted in many UK blue chip companies choosing the Vale for their corporate events. In addition, the company has invested heavily in marketing and advertising via national consumer and trade magazines, press visits and PR and a strong web presence via its website and affiliate sites.

The Future

Planning permission from the Vale of Glamorgan Council has been received to create an "infill" between the hotel and leisure club. This new building will become one of South Wales’ largest conference and meeting centres with a capacity of up to 500 delegates. Additionally, work is soon to commence on the conversion of the grade 1 listed 17th century Hensol Castle into a luxury 5 star spa hotel. The outbuildings on the Hensol estate will also be converted to 51 luxury 2-3 bedroom residential apartments. Plans also include the development of up to 40 one/two/three bedroom self catering villas to supplement the two hotels accommodation.
