Origins

N.W.P. was established in 1996 by David Roy Miller, a senior engineer with over twenty years experience with the power company Manweb. The expertise of the company founders was essentially in Industrial and commercial electrical contracting works, including working on high voltage plant and equipment. To establish a foothold in this area of work required the setting up from day one of a quality based company, committed to safe working, customer service backed up by staff development, training and wellbeing. Since then, the motivation of the business has been to establish a quality contracting company within the area with sustainable long term highly paid jobs for the community. This was only achievable by investing in people and training from within. It soon became obvious that due to a previous lack of investment in training locally, ready made quality staff were not available. This has resulted in many of the staff progressing through the company including the current managing director who started his career with NWP as an electrician eight years ago.

Success Factor

There are a number of key success factors that have led to the growth of the business. First of all, NWP is committed to quality and has approval across a range of standards including ISO 9001, National Inspection Council for Electrical Contracting, Quality Mark Approved in the Electrical Sector, Construction Line; Corgi Register of Gas Installers; Contractor Health and Safety Assessment Scheme and the (ECA) Electrical Contractors Association. The company has also reinvested heavily in staff development and training, which has been recognised through the Achievement Wales Business Award Winner Employer of the Year Award 2002, an IIP (Investor in People) award from ELWA and the Innovation Achiever award from the WDA’s Commitment to Innovation Programme (WDA). Finally, business growth has been based on sound financial stability, including realistic financial targets and objectives are set and communicated to staff, identification of bad debtors, analysis and control of costs, and implementation/adherence of purchasing procedures.

The Future

Since the company was founded in 1996, it has helped hundreds of customers and, as result, is now well known in North Wales and the Northwest of England. NWP is very much a people focused company both in terms of caring for its employees and in providing a quality service to its customers. It the firm’s intention, with the help of Welsh Assembly funding, to relocate its Queensferry office into new purpose built accommodation on Deeside industrial park. This will provide staff with a pleasant environment in which to work and will allow the business to continue to grow by introducing an element of design and manufacture into the services offered. This location will also provide an excellent gateway to offer services into North West England and beyond.
