Genquip

Origins

Genset – a sister company - was selling a large number of generators to be used in welfare units and it was decided that supplying complete accommodation units would be a natural development of the business. As a result, Genquip was set up as a new business to serve this market. Prior to the launch of Genquip, there was no directly comparable product on the market. Customers were using static units and the major challenge was generating market awareness for a revolutionary new product. The founders saw it as a rental product but there needed to be awareness in the market before the end user would request the product from the rental company.

Success Factor

Health and safety legislation has been a key factor in the growth of the company as employers now have to provide the facilities for their employees that Genquip’s product offers. This has been supported by the management style of the business, which is constantly looking for ways of expanding the operation utilising proven models such as IIP, ISO9000 and the lean process. Finally, the uniqueness of the product has been a major factor as it utilises patented technology which results in a revolutionary solution to the problem of security of a mobile welfare unit located in a very remote location

The Future

The aim is to develop a multi-product construction equipment business which will enable the firm to focus on its key strength which is supplying equipment to the construction industry and increasing its market share through a wider offering. The firm is also planning geographical expansion by boosting its exports and selling to more countries.
