Opco Limited

Origins

Established in 2001 by Nick Kelly and Peter Jones, OPCO was formed with the aim of being most successful construction company in Wales. With over 20 years of combined experience in the industry, Nick and Peter identified a niche in the market. With Nick’s senior level construction management experience and Peter’s commercial background, the duo formed a strong partnership they felt confident would result in success. The first contract was to build a residential development in the heart of Cardiff Bay. Arriving on site on a wet Monday morning with only a handful of staff, albeit highly experienced, the firm was faced with a major project to deliver. With the experience of the staff, the ability of the management and pure team work, OPCO carried on with the project and soon turned it around, proving a professional and innovative approach that has catapulted the company to achieve the incredible growth and success it has experienced in just four years. This certainly impressed the client and following completion of that initial project, OPCO was awarded the 2nd, 3rd and 4th phases of the project and are currently working on the 5th stage.

Success Factor

The success of OPCO is based upon close liaison with our clients, understanding their needs and having a supportive working relationship. This enables the projects to proceed smoothly from inception to completion and results in a true partnership between client and contractor. Even in the very first year of trading, several clients awarded OPCO subsequent phases in construction projects. People are the scarcest and costliest resource in any business, but OPCO believes in the philosophy that the right combination of people in the right place at the right time, can solve any problem. OPCO now employs 101 people based between two offices in Cardiff and 10 construction sites throughout South Wales. The rapid expansion of our project teams over the last two years means that the firm has the experience and the capability to manage over ten large scale projects at any one time. Finally, the firm continues to seek to use innovative technology which is easily and cheaply deployed at project level and which can produce immediate returns on investment to customers. With continued investment in research and development, OPCO ensures that it remains at the forefront of technological advancements.

The Future

The business continues to expand rapidly and will reach £60m turnover in 2006. Employee numbers have quadrupled in just two years, and this expansion will continue into 2007 and 2008 as a result of further geographical expansion outside of OPCO’s core south Wales area with jobs planned in Bristol and beyond. Significantly, the firm has recently started its first works in the public sector with the building of a new visitor centre at Cardiff Castle. This high profile job will take two years to complete and will significantly enhance visitors’ experience at the castle.
