Inter-Haul Pallet Services

Origins

Inter-Haul Pallet Services Limited was formed in June of 2001 after Mark Waite saw an opportunity to offer a more modern and advanced approach to the logistical requirements of the South Wales Manufacturing market. After nearly 20 years of working in the Haulage and Distribution sector in South Wales, it became apparent to Mark that the majority of the older more established local logistics companies were either unwilling or unable to adopt the technology available to them and were still adopting the age old tradition of vehicles travelling the length and breadth of the country on multi drop deliveries, wasting valuable time and energy in the process. The business was built on the philosophy of delivering multiple loads into regional depots of other like minded logistics providers across the country during the night for the to affect the deliveries the following morning. This fully utilised the companies vehicles, by making the longer routes at night time when motorways are at their quietest and "double shifting" vehicles for day and night work, reducing fuel usage, pollution and number of vehicles in use. To prove the point in the first two years of trading the company averaged 85 deliveries a day nationwide with a fleet of just 3 commercial vehicles, reducing delivery costs for manufacturers and also reducing delivery times. The company is now making over 300 nationwide deliveries per day, however the fleet has increased only to 7 commercial vehicles, proving the effectiveness of the service. With this philosophy in mind, during 2003 the directors worked closely with over 50 other logistics companies in the United Kingdom to form a network of companies to offer this service in an even more structured method, called a "hub and spoke system". The Pallet-Track Distribution Network was formed and moved 750 pallets through its hub on its first night of operations which has grown to over 2500 pallets per night after 18 months of trading.

Success Factor

One of the advantages of the services offered to the manufacturing industry is the fact that although they are dealing with a local haulage company, the network philosophy gives the added facility of being able to deliver and collect from any part of the country at the request of the client. Dedication to customer service is a key factor, we offer a service the client requires, the majority of clients e mail or fax their daily bookings, safe in the knowledge that the vehicle will collect and deliver on time, releasing valued time for the client to concentrate on their manufacturing requirements. Flexibility to the changing of customer requirements and taking on projects to reduce costs and improve service levels for our clients has also proved to be a key to growth. Actually taking the time to sit down with a client and understanding the whole aspect of their business, has proved on numerous occasions to be a deciding factor in using our services, proving that we offer a service above and beyond the standard haulage company.

The Future

The company has recently taken on a new lease in the adjacent industrial unit, doubling the size of its storage and yard facilities. With the assistance of AIG funding from the Welsh Assembly and support from Finance Wales, a new administration block has been built in anticipation of further growth. Planning permission has recently been applied for a large open canopy of the yard area to allow more vehicles to be loaded and unloaded in clean and dry conditions. The company has also just enrolled with an ELWa approved training provider, supplying modern apprenticeships for young drivers wishing to train in administration and driving roles.
