The Cuddy Group

Origins

The Cuddy Group was founded by Mike and John Cuddy in 1985. It originally started as a plant hire and civil engineering business, but over time diversified into the four divisions that make up the Group today. The initial major challenge for the Group was to establish itself as a major force in the construction industry in South Wales. By 1994, when The Cuddy Group were awarded their first major demolition contract at over £1million in value, they had achieved this aim. Using this as a platform, the Group were then able to build on this work and built up their corporate reputation which allowed them more and more opportunity to work on large and prestigious projects. This enabled them to increase their market share first in Wales, and then beyond in the UK and Europe.

Success Factor

The Cuddy Group places paramount importance on health and safety and has invested heavily in the recruitment of health and safety officers to implement even more stringent standards across all disciplines and also establish a two-way communication between project teams and clients to forward plan and anticipates any potential safety issues. It also has invested heavily in plant, boasting one of the most comprehensive and extensive fleets in the UK. This includes highly specialised machines which allow the Group to undertake far more specialised work than its competitors. This gives the Group a competitive edge, allowing it to remain self-sufficient, not having to rely on third parties to ensure jobs are completed on time and to budget. Intensive Training is also a key factor in the development of the firm and the Group host regular meetings with all staff to establish the levels of training already achieved identify new training priorities and undertake gap skills analysis.

The Future

The company’s plans for the future is to be the safest, most profitable and professional multi-disciplined contractor in the UK. The Group is already close to achieving this aim, and plans to prioritise consolidating its business and further improving its record for service excellence in the coming years.
