Origins

The firm was developed from identifying a gap in the market. A similar local business closed its doors due to the serious illness of its proprietor leaving only one other provider in the South Wales region (and that company was owned by a major US corporation). In addition, there were no other independent companies within this industry in Wales. At start-up, the founders had no working capital available to them but managed to convince their bankers to provide an overdraft facility of £10,000 as start up funds. Further crucial working capital was provided via factoring with the Royal Bank of Scotland. The biggest challenge was starting in such a specialist business with no industry accreditation and therefore £20,000 was invested in securing recognition for the company by the Loss Prevention Council. Fire Sprinklers UK Ltd is now registered under LPS1048 as a registered supervised sprinkler installer, the only independently owned company in Wales to have such recognition.

Success Factor

The main success factor includes a specific focus on training the firm’s engineers and developing a strong service and maintenance division that enabled the firm to secure service contracts with many major companies. Gaining industry accreditation with the Loss Prevention Council has also been crucial as client insurers direct customers to the firm as approved installers. Finally, the development of website has helped expand the profile of the firm and has been responsible for generating significant sales - approximately 50% of turnover in the last financial year.

The Future

Over the next few years, the firm intends to Increase training activities to establish skills that do not presently exist locally within the trade and develop IT strategies to improve customer service, particularly in the area of servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance.
