Crest Co-operative

Origins

The company was established in 1998 with a grant from the National Lottery as it recognised the need for individuals to be able to learn and receive training in a supportive yet real working environment. The challenges faced were getting the community to become involved, to get stakeholders to understand the concept of a social enterprise and to get support organisations to recognise Crest as a real business.

Success Factor

The main factor contributing to the success of the enterprise has been the recent shift in peoples’ understanding of the social economy and its economic impact. With respect to the three enterprises established, the establishment of targets for waste minimisation and recycling by the National Assembly for Wales has been important and the good reputation gained locally for quality services delivered to a high standard.

The Future

The aim of Crest is to become 100% self-sustaining and the enterprise is working towards achieving Level 2 of the Green Dragon environmental standard and has just completed Investors in People assessment. As grants decrease, the business will need to ensure that its income generation increases to ensure viability.
