Go Foods

Origins

Originally established as a partnership in 1990, Sandwich Supplies Ltd was founded in 1992 by Kent Davis and Piers Thomas with the intention of manufacturing and distributing a range of high quality sandwich fillings to the growing sandwich making industry. It achieved a steady £3m turnover within three years and an explosion in catering contracts and national delivery accounts has since boosted turnover by around 40% per annum.

Success Factor

The business has grown through developing the right product at the right price, keeping ahead of the competition, and focusing on quality and service.

The Future

Last year, the firm diversified into a variety of food-on-the-move ranges including filled jacket potatoes, pasta snacks and even pizza-based snacks, offering a single point of contact for chilled food ordering. That rapid expansion now looks like being repeated on the sandwich side, a result of the acquisition of the Reading-based Sandwich Box company last October. Recent new contracts, as well as the development of the Go range has increased productivity of the factory, whilst investment has increased capacity, with further expansion planned. Sandwich manufacturing has now started at Go Foods’ Cwmbran factory and the sandwich range was also revamped and extended this November, with a gourmet range at the top end, and a broader ‘bottom’ range. A new healthy option will also be included. There have also been changes on the only slightly less dynamic sandwich fillings front with a number of major national deals in place. Meanwhile, Go Foods’ move into new food-to-go sectors last year appears to have been a shrewd move, with all the benefits of one-stop-shopping for customers. This includes a range of hand-held foodservice pasta snacks - some of them heatable. The company is currently looking at redesigning them for a retail launch. It also offers a range of filled jacket potatoes, fresh soups (in a microwaveable cup) and a pizza-based snack - the Original Pizza Bar. Go Foods has recently won the national contract to supply Hot Bite sandwich and Panini franchise vending machines, currently seeing a huge surge in sales growth. Therefore, the future will see continued growth in existing markets with the existing products, integration into new markets and the introduction of new products (i.e. sandwiches and other hand held snack products).
